Cherishing Health: Lessons from Time with My Parents

The past four days have been such a gift. I've been spending quality time with my parents, and honestly, seeing how well they're doing just fills my heart with so much joy and gratitude. There's something incredibly precious about witnessing the people who raised you thriving, especially as they navigate this stage of their lives.

A Different Perspective on Aging

What strikes me most is how vibrant and engaged they remain. Sure, they're not the same people they were twenty years ago – none of us are – but they're embracing this chapter with such grace and energy. Watching them laugh together, share stories, and tackle their daily routines with enthusiasm reminds me that aging doesn't have to mean slowing down or giving up on the things that bring meaning to life.

The Reality Check We All Need

But here's what really hit me during these past few days: when I think about other people in their age group who are facing serious health challenges – friends dealing with chronic conditions, neighbors managing medications and treatments, couples where one partner has become a caregiver – it puts everything into perspective.

Health isn't guaranteed. It's not something we earn through good behavior or lose through bad choices alone. Sometimes it's just the luck of the draw, genetics, or circumstances beyond our control. But that reality makes me even more grateful for what my parents have right now, and what I have right now.

Never Taking Health for Granted

This experience has reinforced something that's always been important to me: never taking my health for granted. It's so easy to assume that feeling good is our default state, that our bodies will just keep working the way they always have. But spending time with my parents, seeing how precious their good health is, reminds me that every day I wake up feeling strong and capable is a day to be thankful for.

I don't want to live in fear or become obsessed with every ache and pain. That's not healthy either. But I do want to maintain that awareness – that appreciation for the incredible machine that is the human body, and the gift of feeling well enough to pursue our dreams, help others, and experience all the beautiful moments life has to offer.

Making the Most of Today

There's something about seeing your parents doing well that makes you want to call everyone you love and tell them how much they mean to you. It makes you want to take that walk you've been putting off, try that new hobby, or finally book that trip you've been talking about for years.

Because if there's one thing spending these four days with my parents has taught me, it's that health – physical, mental, and emotional – is the foundation that makes everything else possible. It's what allows us to show up for the people we love, pursue our passions, and contribute to causes we believe in.

A Daily Practice of Gratitude

Moving forward, I want to carry this feeling with me. Not the worry about what might happen, but the deep appreciation for what is happening right now. The simple miracle of waking up each morning with energy to face the day. The privilege of being able to care for others because we first have the blessing of being well ourselves.

So here's to health – not just as the absence of illness, but as the presence of vitality, strength, and the capacity to live fully. Here's to my parents, who continue to show me what it looks like to age with grace and joy. And here's to all of us, learning to treasure each healthy day as the precious gift it truly is.

What are the moments that remind you not to take your health for granted? I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
