A letter to Winter Sport AThletes
Dear GRLs,
As the winter season comes to a close, we want to take a moment to celebrate you. Your commitment and dedication to your teams and to yourselves have not gone unnoticed. Through the highs of big wins and the lows of tough losses, you’ve continued to show up—pushing forward, learning, growing, and proving your resilience time and time again.
Sports are about more than just competition. They’re about navigating team dynamics, managing emotions, and learning how to work toward a common goal. You have juggled all of that while keeping up with school, investing in friendships, and showing up for your families and teammates. That is no small feat, and we see you.
To those of you who have played since you were little, your dedication is inspiring. To those who might have picked up a sport for the first time this season—welcome! And to anyone who has ever thought, I’m too late to start, know that you’re never too late. Opportunities in high school sports are waiting for you; sometimes, you just have to walk through the door.
Ilona Maher didn’t start playing rugby until later in high school and college—and now she’s one of the best. You don’t have to be an expert today; you just have to be willing to try. Putting yourself out there can be intimidating, especially at 14 or 15, but don’t let fear hold you back from living the life you want. Tune out the peer noise, take a chance, and go after what excites you.
We need more GRLs who are bold, who are brave, and who are ready to live authentically. Whatever that means for you—whether it’s trying a new sport, leading your team, or simply showing up every day with a growth mindset—go for it.
We are so proud of you and can’t wait to see what’s next.
Keep going, keep growing, and keep showing up.
With admiration,
The GRL Initiative
