Spring Cleaning, GRL Style: Clearing Space for the Season Ahead

Spring Cleaning, GRL Style: Clearing Space for the Season Ahead

There’s something about spring that makes you want to open a window, breathe deeper, and finally tackle the dusty corners you’ve been ignoring — both in your home and in your head.

For us at The GRL Initiative, spring cleaning is more than a chore — it’s a reset.

Yes, we’re talking about literally packing away the snow pants and clunky boots and getting the stale air out of the room. But we’re also talking about taking stock of what you’ve been carrying, where it’s been holding you back, and what it’s time to let go of.

Out With the Old

Winter often forces us into hibernation. We hold onto things — ideas, expectations, even relationships — out of habit or heaviness. But spring invites you to shed the weight and make space.

That could mean finally cleaning out that catch-all drawer, donating the clothes you swore you’d wear again, or letting go of outdated beliefs that keep you playing small.

It might also mean recognizing when a friendship or relationship has become more draining than nurturing. That doesn’t always mean cutting someone off — sometimes, it just means putting them gently on the shelf for now.

As Brené Brown says:

“Not every relationship is meant to last forever. Some are just for a season, and that’s okay. Pausing a friendship doesn’t mean failure — it can mean growth.”

We love that. Because GRLs grow. And part of growth is making peace with the fact that not everything (or everyone) gets to come with you into your next season.

A Fresh Start, On Purpose

Spring is also a time to call in new energy. Dust off your creativity. Reignite the idea that’s been simmering. Start the project you keep talking yourself out of. Open up that journal, say yes to the walk, pitch the bold idea — even if it’s not fully formed yet.

Mel Robbins puts it like this:

“You are one decision away from a completely different life.”

And sometimes that one decision is as simple as clearing space — in your calendar, in your closet, in your mind — so that something better can bloom.

Your GRL Homework

This week, pick one physical thing and one emotional thing to clear out:

  • Physical: The jacket you haven’t worn in two years? Donate it. That shelf full of “someday” projects? Recycle. Refresh.

  • Emotional: That grudge, that comparison spiral, that friendship that leaves you drained — take a breath. Set a boundary. Choose peace over pressure.

Spring is here. Let it in.
